Considering the optical performance of various kit lenses, I think the Panasonic 14-45 is one of the best at the moment. I am saying this because its optics are unbelievably sharp on the centre and on the borders. This lens controls every thing excellently. When using this lens, you will realize that it has very good control of chromatic aberration (it is not easily noticeable at any aperture and focal length). You will also love distortion control on Panasonic 14-45. Distortion is only slightly evident at 14mm focal length. The control of vignetting is also superb as it is slightly apparent at 14mm at f/3.5.
I am also attracted to this lens by its awesome build quality. I do not think there is any other kit lens that can be compared with this particular lens (even Nikon 18-55mm VR lens). The quality of materials used is great, it has very good focusing as it has no zoom creep on the lens, and zooming power is incredible.

My wife and I have a three year old daughter and we were having a hard time figuring out what she could be for Halloween this year.
